There are many threats in the world today, and as most of you know, a computer virus is one of the biggest problems when it comes to home or business computers. Not only can we get viruses today, but now the viruses are threatening our data!
What is Ransomware?
Ransomware is a computer virus that uses techniques to lock the end-user out of their computer system and away from their data in order to receive payment to gain access. One of the most popular forms of ransomware that most remember was the FBI Virus.
FBI Virus
The FBI virus is a virus that locks the end-user out of their computer and would not allow them to log in to their computer to access their data. Luckily we had ways to remove the virus and recover data from this virus. But today there are bigger threats out there.
Cryptowall
Crytopwall is now one of the biggest ransomware threats in the world and especially in the US. More specifically, we are seeing this threat pop up everywhere in Omaha.
Cryptowall has multiple forms and keeps changing. This virus has the ability to get into your computer and encrypt all of your data. This means that it will copy your data and put a security key on it so the only way you can see it is if you have the code. They will not give you the code until you pay the ransom.
We do not suggest paying the ransom unless if it is absolutely necessary, however, we do suggest taking a few steps to help protect you from these risks.
3 Steps to Protect Yourself from Ransomware
The first step is to make sure that you have the latest and greatest antivirus; we currently offer a managed antivirus that we can monitor and keep track of from our office. This is important to stay up to date with the latest virus protection.
Second, make sure that you are doing computer backups. We suggest doing a local backup as well as a cloud backup. We started offering cloud backup services because of these threats, and they are absolutely necessary if you have a business.
Third, be careful when you are on your computer. Make sure you are only visiting websites that you know are good. Make sure that you are not opening suspicious emails. If it looks fishy, it probably is.
Remember that if it's flashing and trying to get you to click on it, then it could lead you to a virus.
