The Challenge

When the Network Becomes the Problem

A good network should be almost invisible.

Employees should not have to think about which access point they are connected to, whether a document will sync or if moving to another conference room will cause their Wi-Fi to disappear.

For one Omaha nonprofit, those small frustrations had become part of everyday work.

Employees could leave one area of the building and unexpectedly lose connectivity. Devices were not roaming between access points the way they should. Documents sometimes failed to sync because employees thought they were still connected when they were not.

And when something went wrong, employees often assumed their computers were the problem.

Those little interruptions added up.

The organization's operations leader described the network as an “unseen, unsung hero.” Everything else could be working correctly, but without a reliable network, employees still could not do their jobs.

“Nobody can do anything.”

At one point, the organization went nearly two days without access to its network. As the organization renovated its building and prepared for continued growth, it became clear that the existing network was not simply unreliable. It was not built for where the organization was going.

The building presented its own challenges.

There were Wi-Fi dead spots, missing or insufficient equipment and areas that could not reliably support the number of people using them.

ECS did not approach the project by simply recommending more equipment.

The team spent time inside the building. They walked the floors with the client, tested connectivity, evaluated ranges and power settings, reviewed the existing environment and listened to what employees were experiencing in different areas of the building.

Those real-world observations became part of the network design.

“We worked through that whole process together.”

That was important because the organization was not simply being handed a proposal and told, “This is what you need.” ECS could explain what was needed, why it was needed and how it would support the organization over time.

For the organization, the goal was not to build the cheapest network possible. It was to make a responsible investment.

Leadership wanted infrastructure that could support the organization well into the future rather than create another replacement decision a few years later.

“I'd rather the person that's going to be here ten years from now not have to make the decision until that ten-year window is over.”

The organization ultimately selected a more robust solution because the need justified it. The client said they never felt ECS was pushing the more expensive option simply to increase the size of the project. Instead, the conversation focused on why one approach would better fit the environment and provide a longer useful life.

Reliability was not the only concern.

The previous environment was reaching its limits before the organization had even finished growing into the building. During one outage, the team discovered that the available network addresses had been exhausted while the organization still was not at full capacity. Some areas also could not reliably support larger groups gathering for meetings.

Today, the organization has grown further into its space. And instead of the network becoming a bigger problem as the organization grows, those everyday connectivity issues have largely faded into the background.

“Even better [is] to not have all those little problems, because I think I probably would have lost it if we would have continued to scale and those problems scaled with it.”

The organization is still growing. This time, its network is ready to grow with it.
