How to stop Claude from training on your data

To stop Claude from training on your chats, open Settings, go to Privacy and turn off "Help improve Claude." On Free, Pro and Max plans, the switch covers both regular chats and Claude Code. Team, Enterprise and API accounts aren't used for training by default.

The switch also changes how long Anthropic keeps your data. With it on, chats are kept for five years. With it off, they're kept for 30 days.

Claude Free, Pro and Max

  1. Go to Settings, then Privacy, or open claude.ai/settings/data-privacy-controls.
  2. Turn off Help improve Claude.
  3. Use Incognito chat for anything sensitive. Incognito chats are never used for training, even if the switch is on.
  4. Skip the thumbs up and thumbs down buttons on anything involving a client. Feedback is stored separately for up to five years.
  5. Delete chats you don't need. Deleted chats aren't used for future training.
  6. Don't create public share links for work chats.

Files and messages from connected sources like Google Drive aren't used for training unless you copy their content into the chat.

Claude Team, Enterprise and the API

Business plans and the Anthropic API don't train on your inputs or outputs by default. Standard retention is 30 days. Zero data retention is available to qualifying Enterprise organizations through Anthropic's account team.

A few settings can still send data back to Anthropic, so it's worth knowing where they are.

SettingWhat we recommend

Claude Code sign-inSign in with your Team or Enterprise seat or an API key. A personal Pro or Max login puts your work code under consumer terms.
/feedback, /bug and /share in Claude CodeDon't send transcripts that include client code. They're kept for five years. Set DISABLE_FEEDBACK_COMMAND=1 to block them.
"Can Anthropic look at your session transcript?"Answer No or Don't ask again. Yes uploads the full session, code included.
Usage metrics and error reportsThese don't include your code or prompts. To turn all of it off at once, set CLAUDE_CODE_DISABLE_NONESSENTIAL_TRAFFIC=1.
Local session historyClaude Code keeps transcripts in plain text on your computer for 30 days. On shared machines, shorten that with the cleanupPeriodDays setting.

For a team, put these environment variables in Claude Code's managed settings file so every session picks them up without anyone needing to remember.
