Grok Business, Grok Enterprise and the xAI API don't train on your data by default.
The second step is the one people miss. X has its own setting, and it covers your public posts as well as anything you've asked Grok inside the X app.
Step 1: grok.com and the Grok app
- On grok.com, click your name in the bottom left, then Settings, then Data Controls.
- Turn off Improve the Model.
- Turn off Personalize Grok using X, unless you want Grok reading your X profile.
- Turn off Personalize Grok with your conversation history if you use Grok for work.
- Turn off chat link sharing. In 2025, shared Grok links were indexed by search engines and showed up in public search results.
For anything sensitive, use Private Chat, the ghost icon. Private chats stay out of your history and aren't used for training. Also skip rating answers, since feedback can still be used for training. If you upload files, delete them separately. Deleting a chat doesn't delete its files.
Step 2: the setting inside X
- In X, go to Settings and privacy, then Privacy and safety, then Data sharing and personalization, then Grok & Third-party Collaborators.
- Uncheck the box that allows your public data and your Grok interactions to be used for training and fine-tuning.
- On the same screen, delete your Grok conversation history if you've used Grok in X.
Protected X accounts are left out of training automatically. The setting is per account, so check your company's X account too. X's recommendation system still learns from your activity after you opt out.
Grok for business and the xAI API
| Product | Trains on your data? | What we recommend |
|---|---|---|
| xAI API | Not without your explicit permission. xAI keeps requests for 30 days for abuse review, then deletes them. | A team admin can turn on Zero Data Retention in the xAI Console. It switches off features that rely on stored data, including the Files and Batch APIs. |
| Grok Business | No | Use it instead of personal Grok accounts for anyone who needs Grok at work. It costs $30 per user per month. |
| Grok Enterprise | No | Adds single sign-on, user provisioning and audit controls. The Vault add-on supports your own encryption keys. |
Don't opt an API account into any program that gives credits in exchange for sharing your data. That's an opt-in to training.
Frequently asked questions
Does Grok train on my X posts?
Your public posts can be used unless you uncheck the box in X's Grok & Third-party Collaborators settings, or your account is protected.
If I opt out, is my old data removed from Grok?
No. Opting out applies going forward. Anything already used for training stays in the model.
Do I need to change both settings?
Yes, if you use Grok in both places. The grok.com setting and the X setting are separate.
