That trade-off catches people out. Google ties training and history together, so you can't keep your old chats and also opt out of training. Temporary Chat is the workaround.
Step by step
- Open Gemini Apps Activity.
- Turn off Keep Activity. From then on, Google keeps your chats for 72 hours and doesn't use them for training.
- On the same page, turn off the option that lets your audio and Gemini Live recordings improve Google services.
- Delete past activity you don't want kept.
If you want to keep your chat history
Leave Keep Activity on and use Temporary Chat for anything sensitive. Temporary chats aren't used for training and Google deletes them after 72 hours.
Human review is the catch
Human reviewers, including staff at Google's contractors, read a sample of Gemini chats. Google keeps a reviewed chat for up to three years, separate from your account, and deleting your activity doesn't remove it. Don't send feedback on anything sensitive either. Feedback is used for training even with Keep Activity off.
Gemini for work and the Gemini API
If you use Gemini with a Google Workspace work or school account, different data terms apply. Do client work there, not on a personal Gmail account, and ask your Workspace admin how Gemini is set up for your organization.
For developers, the free tier of the Gemini API can be used to improve Google's products, and people may read it. Paid projects with billing turned on aren't used that way. Turn on billing for any project that touches client data.
Frequently asked questions
Can I keep my chat history and still opt out?
Not with a single setting. Keep Activity controls both. Leave it on and use Temporary Chat for anything sensitive, or turn it off and lose history.
Why did my Gemini chat history disappear?
Turning off Keep Activity stops saving new chats. That's expected. Use Temporary Chat instead if you'd like to keep history for everyday questions.
Does a paid Google AI plan change this?
No. A paid personal Google AI plan follows the same Keep Activity setting as the free version.
